Unveiled in 1985, the Saab 9000 happens to be an front-wheel drive, executive car designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The initial 9000 was a 5-door hatchback with a type-4 chassis. But later versions saw quite a bit of alteration in the body styling as well as in terms of power and performance.
At the onset, the Saab 9000 came fitted with a DOHC watercooled, 16-valve 4 cylinder turbocharged engine which had an output of 175 hp. With two body styles, the 4-door notch back and a 4-door hatch back, prominent features included a computerized display unit which gave information regarding fuel consumption, battery voltage, fuel gauge information, outside temperature, etc. The Saab 9000 also measured 4.66 m in length and had a wheel base of 2.67 m.
Later versions saw an increase in engine power ratings with a 5-speed manual transmission as well as a 4-speed automatic one. The model ranges too went up with the inclusion of CS and CS Turbo hatchbacks, CDE Turbo notchback as well as a 9000 Aero hatchback that was considered to give a high performance at 225 hp.
It was to its credit that the Saab 9000 brought in a change to its base engine powers with the 2.3 litre V6 engine, which gave a quieter feel and a much smoother and stronger performance with adequate acceleration. The 4-speed automatic transmission affords a smooth and firm ride quality too to this stylish icon. Apart from great stylish looks, the Saab 9000 also has comfortable and roomy interiors that can seat 4 large adults easily. Armed with several desirable features like air conditioners, cruise control, central locking systems, anti lock brakes, airbags, etc, the Saab 9000 is considered to be extremely reliable and safe. It is a fact that this car was adjudged the country’s safest car for three consecutive years by Folksam, one of Sweden’s leading insurance companies.
